Les Scouts du Canada

History of scouts of Canada in Quebec

Founded in 1907, the Scouts moved to Canada in 1908 in St. Catherines (Ontario) and is rapidly expanding in Canada.

In 1925, a young teacher of Longueuil, Georges-Henri Sainte-Marie, decided to found his own company in the parish of Saint-Antoine de Longueuil and refused to join Boy Scouts. He took his Scouts in Sainte-Rose de Laval for the first scout camp was the 6 to 13 July 1926.

At the same time, the Abbe Lionel Groulx had the opportunity to see a troop camped at St. Donat de Montcalm. He was captivated. Abbe Groulx met Father Adelard Dugré, SJ who subsequently made a study published in March 1926. Some conclusions from this study: Scouting can be valid for the French-Canadians to be adapted condition; not by militarism, but a scouting focused on patriotism and love of French-Canadian, and arranged a separate Scouting the Boy Scouts. Father Dugré entrusted to two men, brothers Guido and Philippe Morel, the task of establishing the two first troops to Montreal.

In 1928 there were five troops in the Montreal area. The five troops formed an association which was called the Federation of Catholic Scouts Canada-French. A provincial charter was granted to him June 26, 1928. Since 1933, the bishops of the province of Quebec gathered at a meeting decided to form a federation of Catholic Scouts in the province of Quebec, in dependence and direction. On December 11, 1934, the three main organizations Scouts are: The Federation of Catholic French-Canadian Scouts, Boy Scouts Catholic Trois-Rivieres and Quebec Catholic Scouts

These organizations adopted a draft law. On December 17, 1934, Cardinal Villeneuve petitioned for membership in Boy Scouts, this time on behalf of the Federation of Catholic Scouts in the province of Quebec. The official signing of the agreement took place in Ottawa, April 10, 1935. On May 27, Baden Powell went to the aechevêché of Quebec where he countersigned the agreement.

Upon agreement, the new federation has members in 7 dioceses. The federation has a provincial council and has nearly 3000 members listed. On November 12, 1936, the federation received a provincial charter.

The Association of Scouts of Canada was founded in 1961 and an agreement is signed with Boy Scouts of Canada at Rideau Hall in Ottawa in the presence of General Georges Vanier Philias then Governor General and Chief Scout of Canada. On July 9, 1969, a special Act of Parliament incorporated the Canadian Association of Scouts of Canada as well as Boy Scouts of Canada. The following year, an association agreement uniting the two groups.

Scouting French migrates across Canada. New needs arise and thus born three new federations in 1975: Western Ontario and the Atlantic.
